Available for Windows 10 PC, this free game is inspired by the classic puzzle game Lemmings and includes over 100 puzzle levels to tackle and an editor feature to create puzzle challenges of your own. The graphics are good, the gameplay is challenging, and overall, Pingus has the potential of being a fun way to pass the time. It just needs a little fine-tuning here and there to make the gaming experience more fluid.
Game fans of a certain age will surely remember Lemmings, which was one of the hottest games of the 1990s. Amazingly, someone actually managed to recreate a clone of the game as a Web-based application that you can play in your browser. It works just like the original, and is just as fun and addictive as you'll remember it. The object of the game is to assign the lemmings different tasks to get a minimum number of lemmings into the exit before time runs out. It is easy in the early levels, but the difficulty rises quickly. This is a game that requires patience, logical and creative thinking, and fast mental and physical reflexes. Installing the game is very easy. Place the Lemmings for Windows CD into your computers CD/DVD drive. Open the CD in Windows Explorer and then double click on the “WINLEMM” folder. Now, double click on the “LEMMINGS” or “LEMMINGS.EXE” file. The game will now install.
The primary menu for Pingus offers up options to play the storyline mode, access the game's settings, play the levelsets mode and access the level editor. While Pingus fails to define the two modes at the menu, it appears the levelsets mode is a collection of either themed puzzles (Halloween, Christmas, etc.) or levels submitted by other players. Regardless as to the why, the levelset mode is filled with some very difficult puzzle levels to solve.
In each game mode, the goal for Pingus is to guide a group of penguins to their igloo, navigating across a series of obstacles. You need to a set number of penguins to safely reach the igloo to be successful and advance to the next puzzle level. The obstacles can be dug around, jumped over, and other actions. Pingus lacks a traditional how-to section. Instead, the game relies on a series of tutorials in the storyline mode. The tutorial island includes several puzzles that showcase one or more of the game's features. For example, the first tutorial level features the dig action for penguins, the next features the float action and then you face a puzzle that requires both actions for success. It's well constructed, and while it covers all the bases nicely, I couldn't help but wish it was more condensed.
A close-up view of the map resides in the center of the display, scoring information sits at the top, a thumbnail map of the entire path in the bottom left corner, and several control buttons scattered around the screen. Penguins fall from random locations at the top of the screen and automatically walk forwards on the maze. In true Lemmings style, if they hit an obstacle, the penguins reverse course and will not stop should they approach a cliff, watery pit or other danger.
To guide the penguins, you have action controls that line the left side of the display. Click or tap on an action control and then click on a penguin to initiate that ability. Actions are limited in number, giving the gameplay a nice level of difficulty as you devise a strategy to reach the igloo. Add that the penguins never stop moving and the difficulty level increases.
Fun, but needs a little fine tuning
Pingus is an entertaining Windows 10 game with potential. While the graphics are good and the game premise is filled with challenges, the game needs a little fine tuning before it can be a solid time waster.
For starters, the screen resolution is incredibly low causing the visuals to be squashed. I would have preferred the puzzle maze to be larger, allowing for you to not only make out the detail better but also make it easier to click on a penguin.
I also wouldn't mind seeing the tutorial portion of the game more condensed. Maybe have one level in which all the actions can be utilized. As is, the tutorial covers these actions well, but it takes forever to get to the full, storyline levels.
All in all, the gaming experience with Pingus was fun. You may have to squint a little and be patient as you work your way through the tutorial island, but none of these shortcomings are full deal breakers. Pingus is a Windows 10 PC game worth trying and with a little polishing, it couldd be a worthy game to spend a little down time with.

Mother Nature has come up with some pretty strange ways of keeping population levels stable, but none are so strange as that of the Lemming, a small vole-like rodent which inhabits sub-arctic regions of Scandinavia and North America. When the population level of Lemmings become too great, these cute little critters make the ultimate sacrifice for their race - they throw themselves off the nearest cliff!
Taking a tip or two from nature, Psygnosis have adapted the obscure life story of the Lemming and turned it into a multi-screen epic which sees you trying to halt the mass genocide of a race of dungaree-clad, green-haired creatures. Your brief is simple - using your trusty mouse, you must guide the Lemmings to safety with a minimal number of fatalities en route.
Each level starts with a trapdoor creaking open and a cry of 'Let's Go!' The Lemmings then pour forth to their eventual doom. Our heroes file along the ground until they encounter an obstacle (in which case they turn around and walk back in the opposite direction) or die horribly.
Every Lemming starts its life as a walker but - with your divine Intervention - they can be assigned various skills which will allow them to collectively construct a safe passage to the exit of each level. By selecting one of the skills from a strip of icons which run along the base of the screen and then clicking on a Lemming, you can endow it with the skills of a climber, a floater, a digger, a blocker and even a suicidal bomber.
Each level requires you to save a minimum number of Lemmings before you can proceed to the next. If you fail you'll have to try again. If, on the other hand, you find that things aren't going too well -large numbers of Lemmings are trapped, for example - then you can end It all by 'nuking' every Lemming that is left alive. The poor little fellows stop what they are doing, hold their heads in pain and then with a last desperate cry of 'Oh No!', they explode in a shower of pixels.
The majority of the time you'll be trying to save the Lemmings on your own, but Psygnosis have built in a 2 player option which adds an exciting new twist to the game. This time, the object is to save more Lemmings than your opponent, by guiding them away from your opponent's exit point. This usually involves a large number of Lemming deaths, but it can be great fun.
Lemmings is absolutely brilliant. Psygnosis have managed to produce a game that is not only totally original, but also features the kind of addictive game-play that will keep you coming back for more time and time again. If you only ever intend buying one game for your Amiga, then it's got to be Lemmings. Put simply. Lemmings is an absolute Amiga classic.
One of the most classic and most fun arcade games in the 90's. You control a bunch of these small lemmings and you can give each ones different orders. You have to save a specified percentage of the lemming that are available, but doesn't matter if you waste a few lives of the small poor lemmings.
They can do anything from climbing and digging to stand still and lift people and to explode. A very fun and challenging game which an simple idea. Get this classic.
